5 Cable Channels Shut Down: Protest Assembly of Journalists

A day before the celebration the apex body of media in Tripura – Assembly of Journalists (AoJ) on Saturday staged a protest here against the shut down of five popular news channels of the state, administrative attacks on media, increasing incidences on journalists and threats on media.

AoJ general secretary Sanit Debroy alleged as many as five local television channels were shut down in three years and recently without any valid reasons most popular news channel PB 24 was disconnected from the service provider loop.

It has been told that telecasting of all five channels were stopped with the direction from the top level of the government, which is most unfortunate and dangerous for democracy, Debroy stated adding that media as a whole is completely oppressed in Tripura.

A popular and widely network cable new channel of Tripura PB 24 has been disconnected from the loop of the set-top box on Sunday after telecasting the harassment and assault of All India Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhisekh Banerjee along with other leaders of TMC at Khowai police station.

The attack on media has become a daily affair in the state since September 11 last year when Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb while laying the foundation stone of SEZ in Sabroom of South Tripura, lashed out at a section of the media stating that they were publishing stories regarding mismanagement in hospital and public sufferings during Covid-19, which had been misleading the people of the state.
