21 Killed as Bus Falls into Gorge in Udhampur

A devastating road accident occurred in Udhampur on Monday morning, leaving 21 people dead and more than 29 injured.

The bus, travelling from Ramnagar, plunged nearly 100 metres off the road near Kagot around 10 am before overturning. According to Press Trust of India, around 50 passengers were on board, most of them daily commuters heading to Udhampur for work.

Fifteen people died at the scene, while six others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The injured were rushed to medical facilities, including GMC Udhampur, for treatment.

Passengers said the bus was overloaded and moving at high speed. A tyre burst near the Kagot drain reportedly caused the driver to lose control, leading to the crash. The impact severely damaged the upper portion of the vehicle.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed that the bus was a public transport vehicle and said authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the kin of those killed and ₹50,000 for the injured.

In another development, the bus also struck an auto-rickshaw before plunging down. The occupants of the auto sustained injuries but survived. An army convoy passing by immediately launched rescue operations, and the overturned bus was later lifted using a hydraulic crane.
