A catastrophic fire broke out at a commercial accommodation facility in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of at least 21 people. Authorities confirmed that several of the victims were foreign nationals, primarily believed to be from Central Asia and Africa, though official identification is still underway.

The incident has triggered renewed concerns over fire safety compliance in densely populated urban commercial buildings.

Fire Origin and Rapid Spread in Multi-Storey Building

According to officials from the Delhi Fire Service, the emergency call was received at approximately 8:50 AM. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated in a restaurant operating on the ground floor of the building before rapidly spreading to upper floors and the basement.

Within minutes, flames engulfed multiple sections of the six-storey structure, severely limiting evacuation options.

Panic, Jumping Victims and Emergency Response

Eyewitness accounts and video evidence from the scene show desperate occupants jumping from the third and fourth floors to escape intense flames and thick smoke.

Local residents attempted to assist by placing mattresses and makeshift cushioning materials on the ground to reduce injury risk for those jumping from the building.

Emergency responders successfully rescued around 40 individuals, many of whom sustained critical injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Additionally, at least six people were pulled out from the basement area during rescue operations.

Building Violations and Fire Safety Concerns

Investigators have flagged serious regulatory violations at the site:

  • The establishment was officially permitted as a Bed-and-Breakfast unit with only 6 approved rooms, but reportedly expanded illegally to around 25 rooms.

  • The building lacked a mandatory Fire No Objection Certificate (NoC).

  • There was only one narrow entry and exit point, severely hampering evacuation.

  • The basement area became a major trap zone due to restricted access and smoke accumulation.

Location and Usage of the Building

The hotel was located on Press Enclave Road in Malviya Nagar, near major medical institutions such as AIIMS and Max Hospital. The accommodation was frequently used by families and relatives of patients undergoing treatment at these hospitals.

Rising Fire Incidents in Delhi

This tragedy adds to growing concerns over fire safety in the national capital. Official data indicates that in the past six months alone, 66 people have lost their lives in fire-related incidents across Delhi.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess violations of safety norms. Action is expected against responsible parties once the inquiry is completed.
