Assam is once again battling one of its worst annual natural disasters as relentless monsoon rainfall has submerged vast parts of the state, displacing lakhs of residents, damaging critical infrastructure and disrupting normal life. The arrival of the southwest monsoon (mausam) has once again plunged thousands of Assamese families into hardship. In several parts of Guwahati, including Rajapul, rapidly rising floodwaters entered residential colonies within hours, trapping people inside their homes before rescue personnel reached them by inflatable boats.

The devastation extends far beyond the capital city.

Continuous heavy rain has inundated villages across multiple districts, washed away road connectivity, interrupted railway services and submerged agricultural land alongside large stretches of tea plantations.

Latest official assessments indicate that over eight lakh residents across 16 districts have been affected, while the death toll has reached around 50. The Brahmaputra and many of its tributaries continue flowing above the danger mark, with weather agencies warning that additional heavy rainfall could worsen the situation.

For Assam, annual flooding has become an unfortunate reality.

Every monsoon, overflowing rivers swallow villages, highways disappear beneath muddy water, railway networks come to a standstill and thousands of families are shifted to relief camps.

Schools are converted into emergency shelters while rescue boats replace public transport in many flooded areas.

The 2026 floods have followed the same destructive pattern.

Entire villages remain submerged, embankments have been damaged, transportation infrastructure has suffered extensive losses and thousands of displaced residents continue living inside relief camps established by the government.


Tea Industry Faces Heavy Losses

Among the worst-hit sectors is Assam's globally recognised tea industry.

Several tea estates, particularly in the Nazira region of Sivasagar district, remain underwater, threatening crop quality and production.

Prolonged waterlogging delays leaf plucking, encourages fungal diseases, lowers tea quality and disrupts factory operations. Thousands of plantation workers also lose valuable income whenever estates remain inaccessible for extended periods.


Rescue Operations Continue Round the Clock

Emergency response teams comprising the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administrations are conducting rescue operations across affected districts.

With major rivers still flowing above danger level and additional rainfall forecast, authorities remain on high alert.


Why Does Assam Flood So Frequently?

The answer begins with the Brahmaputra River itself.

Originating in Tibet before flowing through Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Bangladesh, the Brahmaputra stretches nearly 2,900 kilometres, making it one of the world's largest river systems.

Unlike conventional rivers confined within a single channel, the Brahmaputra spreads across a vast braided floodplain consisting of multiple channels. During intense monsoon rainfall, this unique geography naturally increases the possibility of large-scale flooding.

Scientists believe excessive rainfall alone cannot explain Assam's worsening floods.

Climate researchers say global warming is making this process even more dangerous.

Instead of receiving moderate rainfall spread across several days, Northeast India is increasingly witnessing extremely intense cloudbursts capable of releasing enormous quantities of rain within only a few hours.

Warmer atmospheric temperatures also enable the air to retain more moisture, creating conditions favourable for extreme rainfall events.

When these moisture-rich weather systems collide with the Himalayas and Meghalaya Plateau, torrential rain rapidly drains into Assam's river network, causing flash floods, prolonged inundation and severe erosion.

Experts warn that future floods are expected to become even more sudden and destructive despite only modest increases in annual rainfall totals.

Assam's flood crisis is no longer merely a seasonal disaster.

It has evolved into a complex challenge driven by climate change, changing rainfall patterns, river morphology, fragile Himalayan ecosystems and expanding human settlements along floodplains.
