AfD Victory Raises Fresh Questions Over German Politics

Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has recorded a historic victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, emerging as the largest political force but falling short of the parliamentary majority required to govern independently.

According to preliminary official results released after Sunday's election, the AfD secured 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament. The party needed 42 seats for an outright majority.

The result marks the AfD's strongest performance in a German state election and more than doubles its 2021 vote share of 20.8%.

AfD Delivers Major Blow to Friedrich Merz's CDU

The election produced a dramatic setback for Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The CDU fell to 17.2% and 15 seats, according to preliminary official figures. The party had previously governed Saxony-Anhalt since 2002.

The scale of the AfD's victory has intensified debate over the future direction of German politics, particularly in the country's eastern states.

AfD Wins 39 Seats, But Majority Remains Out of Reach

Despite its overwhelming lead in the popular vote, the AfD cannot form a government by itself.

The Saxony-Anhalt parliament has 83 seats, meaning a party needs at least 42 lawmakers to command an absolute majority. The AfD finished with 39 seats, leaving it three seats short.

The other parties have previously rejected cooperation with the AfD, making government formation potentially difficult.

Germany's established parties have maintained what is commonly known as the political "firewall", refusing to enter governing coalitions with the AfD.

Ulrich Siegmund Emerges as Key AfD Figure

AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund played a central role in the election campaign.

Following the result, Siegmund presented the outcome as evidence that voters wanted a fundamental political change in Saxony-Anhalt. He has also positioned the state as a potential launching point for the party's ambitions ahead of Germany's 2029 federal election.

Siegmund's campaign focused heavily on issues including immigration, deportation policy, national identity and opposition to what the party describes as "woke" politics.

Immigration and Economic Concerns Drive Political Debate

The AfD's strong performance comes amid widespread voter dissatisfaction with established political parties and concerns over economic conditions.

Immigration, asylum, employment, inflation, public security and German national identity were among the major themes surrounding the election.

The result has highlighted a growing political divide between voters seeking tougher policies on migration and those concerned about the expansion of right-wing politics.

AfD's Rise Draws International Attention

The Saxony-Anhalt result has attracted considerable international attention because the AfD came closer than ever to controlling a German state government since the end of World War II.

The party has never previously participated in a governing coalition at either state or federal level in Germany.

The election is therefore being closely watched for its possible implications for German politics ahead of the 2029 federal election.

What Happens Next in Saxony-Anhalt?

The immediate challenge is government formation.

With the AfD holding 39 seats and the remaining parties collectively controlling 44, the AfD cannot govern alone. Other parties have ruled out a coalition with the party, meaning negotiations over the next state government could become complicated.

The election has consequently produced a paradox: the AfD won the largest share of the vote by a wide margin, but its path to forming the government remains uncertain.

Why the Saxony-Anhalt Election Matters

The result represents a significant development in Germany's political landscape. The AfD has strengthened its position in eastern Germany while the CDU suffered a sharp decline.

With the AfD recording 43.8% of the vote and 39 seats, the election has opened a new chapter in the debate over immigration, economic policy, national identity and the future of Germany's traditional political alliances.
