6.2 Magnitude Afghanistan Earthquake Sends Tremors Across Eight Countries
A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region on Saturday evening, triggering tremors across a vast area spanning South Asia and Central Asia. The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 7:04 PM IST, was felt in India, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan.
The strong tremors created panic in several regions, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi-NCR, where residents rushed out of homes, offices, and commercial buildings as a precaution.
Fortunately, no immediate reports of casualties or major property damage have emerged.
Epicentre Located in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush Region
According to seismic monitoring agencies (USGS) the earthquake's epicentre was located nearly 81 kilometres from Kalafghan in northeastern Afghanistan. The quake originated at a depth of approximately 215 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface, making it a deep-focus earthquake capable of being felt over long distances.
Residents in Srinagar reported experiencing noticeable shaking. Local resident Imtiaz Ahmed said he observed his chair and overhead electrical wires swaying while sitting outside his residence. Another resident, student Waheed, said he felt mild tremors while travelling.
Tremors Also Recorded in Himachal Pradesh and Pakistan
Earlier on Saturday, a separate 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district at around 11:38 AM. The epicentre was located about 22 kilometres north-northwest of Dharamsala at a shallow depth of five kilometres.
Meanwhile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported four earthquakes in Pakistan during the last 24 hours.
The strongest among them measured 5.5 magnitude and struck Balochistan on Saturday morning at a depth of 40 kilometres. Initial reports suggested that at least five people sustained injuries.
Why Afghanistan Frequently Experiences Major Earthquakes
Afghanistan is considered one of the world's most earthquake-prone nations due to its location along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Experts say the continuous movement and collision of these massive tectonic plates generate enormous geological pressure beneath the Earth's surface. The accumulated stress is periodically released through earthquakes.

Additionally, the Hindu Kush mountain range lies along several active fault lines, resulting in frequent deep and high-intensity earthquakes whose tremors are often felt in India, Pakistan and across Central Asia.
Earthquakes Above Magnitude 6.5 Pose Greater Risks
Seismologists note that earthquakes measuring 6.5 magnitude or higher significantly increase the possibility of loss of life, infrastructure damage and economic disruption. While earthquakes below magnitude 6 generally cause limited damage, stronger quakes can devastate densely populated regions.
