Ajinkya Rahane, captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has been fined for maintaining a slow over rate during the 22nd match of the IPL 2026 season.
The incident occurred during KKR’s clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The team failed to complete their allotted 20 overs within the stipulated time, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take action under the IPL Code of Conduct.
First Offence of the Season
According to the official statement, this was KKR’s first slow over rate offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. As per the regulations, Rahane has been fined ₹12 lakh (₹1.2 million) for the violation. No additional penalties were imposed on other team members for this initial offence.
What Constitutes a Slow Over Rate?
Under IPL rules, each team is required to bowl their 20 overs within 90 minutes, including strategic time-outs. If a team fails to complete the overs within this timeframe, it is deemed a slow over rate. The on-field umpires and the match referee monitor the pace of play, with the captain held responsible for ensuring compliance.
Penalties for Repeat Offences
The IPL has a strict penalty structure for repeated slow over rate violations:
- Second Offence:
- Captain fined ₹24 lakh.
- Other playing members fined 25% of their match fee or ₹6 lakh, whichever is lower.
- Third Offence:
- Captain fined ₹30 lakh.
- One-match suspension for the captain.
- Additional fines may also be imposed on team members.
Implications for KKR
Since this is KKR’s first offence of the season, the penalty remains limited to a monetary fine. However, any further breaches could result in stricter sanctions, including financial penalties for players and a potential match ban for Rahane, which could significantly impact the team’s campaign.
