Ajit Agarkar Tenure Nears End, Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha in Race

The future of Ajit Agarkar as chairman of the
BCCI senior men's selection committee is under renewed discussion, with his current tenure approaching its end.

According to reports, the former India fast bowler is unlikely to receive another extension. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha have emerged as two prominent names being considered for the chief selector's position.

The issue assumes greater significance with the BCCI Annual General Meeting scheduled for Friday, when the board is expected to address key administrative matters.

Could Agarkar's Recent Selection Meeting Be His Last?

Agarkar recently chaired the meeting that finalised India's squads for the upcoming white-ball assignments against the West Indies.

The selection panel also announced the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy, with Agarkar involved in the selection process.

Reports indicate that the meeting could have been his final appearance as chairman of the senior selection committee. However, the BCCI has yet to formally announce a change in leadership.

Agarkar's Record Since Taking Charge in 2023

Agarkar became chairman of the senior men's selection committee in July 2023, succeeding Chetan Sharma.

His tenure has coincided with a highly successful period for India's white-ball teams. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and followed it with the Champions Trophy title in 2025. The Indian team also reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final during Agarkar's tenure.

The selection panel has also been involved in a period of considerable transition across India's senior teams, making the future composition of the committee an important issue for the BCCI.

Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha Emerge as Names in Contention

If Agarkar's tenure ends, attention will turn to the person who could take charge of India's senior selection panel.

Reports identify Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha as leading candidates under consideration. Both have represented India at international level and have substantial experience in domestic and franchise cricket.

Patel was an India wicketkeeper-batter, while Ojha built his international career as a left-arm spinner.

Both former cricketers have also been part of IPL-winning teams on three occasions.

Parthiv Patel's India Career

Parthiv Patel played international cricket for India across Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

He featured in 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and two T20 Internationals. Patel scored 934 runs in Tests and 736 runs in ODIs, in addition to his T20I contribution.

His wicketkeeping record for India included 103 catches and 19 stumpings.

His experience extends beyond playing cricket, with the former wicketkeeper subsequently becoming involved in coaching, commentary and franchise-level cricket operations.

Pragyan Ojha's International Record

Pragyan Ojha represented India in 24 Tests, 18 ODIs and six T20 Internationals.

The left-arm spinner claimed 113 Test wickets, along with 21 wickets in ODIs and 10 in T20I cricket.

His best Test bowling figures were 6/47.

Ojha has also gained experience in cricket administration and selection-related responsibilities, adding another dimension to his profile as the BCCI considers the future composition of its senior selection panel.

BCCI Chief Selector Decision Awaits Formal Confirmation

For now, the reported succession plan remains subject to an official BCCI decision.

Agarkar's tenure, the upcoming AGM and the reported emergence of Patel and Ojha have placed the senior selection committee's leadership under the spotlight.

Any change at the top of the selection panel could have implications for squad planning and India's preparations for future international assignments. The BCCI's formal decision will determine whether Agarkar continues or a new chairman takes over.
