Suvendu Adhikari has been chosen as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal after being unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party at a meeting held at the Convention Center in Kolkata on Friday.
The announcement of Adhikari’s selection was made by Amit Shah following the conclusion of the BJP legislators’ meeting.
Speaking at the gathering, Shah said the BJP’s ideological foundation traces back to Syama Prasad Mukherjee and stated that the party’s rise to power in Bengal marked the realization of a long-standing political vision.
Shah further declared that the BJP government would take decisive action against illegal infiltration not only in Bengal but across the country, describing the issue as a matter of national security rather than political polarization.
He also mentioned that Sunitra Chattopadhyay, a descendant of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, had joined the BJP. Shah described it as historically significant that the party was forming a government in Bengal during the 150th year of “Vande Mataram.”
Launching a sharp attack on the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee, Shah alleged that criminal elements had gained influence in politics under the Trinamool Congress regime, hampering development in the state.
Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.
Top NDA leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony along with Chief Ministers from several BJP-ruled states.
The 56-year-old BJP leader secured a major political victory by defeating Mamata Banerjee from the Bhawanipur Assembly constituency in the recently concluded elections.
Adhikari also retained the Nandigram Assembly seat for the second consecutive time after defeating Mamata Banerjee there earlier in the 2021 Assembly elections.
The BJP won 207 seats in the West Bengal Assembly elections, enabling the party to form its first-ever government in the state.
