Amit Shah Meets President Murmu, Speculation Grows Over Major Modi Cabinet Reshuffle Ahead of Key Elections

Speculation over a major reshuffle in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Union Cabinet has intensified after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met  President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday. Sources within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suggest that the proposed exercise could involve significant changes not only in the central government but also in the party organisation.

The political buzz comes at a crucial time as the BJP prepares for a series of important Assembly elections, including the high-stakes Uttar Pradesh polls scheduled for next year.

George Kurian's Exit Fuels Reshuffle Speculation

The speculation gained momentum after Union Minister George Kurian resigned following the BJP's decision not to renominate him to the Rajya Sabha. Political observers believe the move could be the beginning of a wider Cabinet reshuffle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also met President Droupadi Murmu earlier this week. Although the meeting was officially termed routine, it further strengthened rumours of an imminent Cabinet expansion before the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

BJP Reviewing Ministerial Performance

According to senior BJP leaders, the anticipated reshuffle is expected to go beyond merely filling vacant positions. The party leadership is reportedly assessing ministers based on their performance, regional representation and evolving political requirements of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has also not been renominated to the Rajya Sabha after completing his term. Meanwhile, leaders such as Pankaj Choudhary and Harsh Malhotra have been assigned organisational responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi respectively, in line with the BJP's "one person, one post" principle.

Electoral Strategy To Shape Cabinet Expansion

Party insiders indicate that electoral considerations will play a decisive role in the Cabinet reshuffle. States heading for elections may receive greater representation in the Union government.

The BJP leadership is also expected to accommodate demands from alliance partners to maintain cohesion within the NDA. Following the recent political developments in Maharashtra, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has strengthened its position within the alliance and may seek enhanced representation.

Organisational Changes Also Likely

Sources said the BJP is simultaneously considering organisational restructuring under newly appointed party president Nitin Nabin. The 45-year-old leader is expected to strike a balance between experienced leaders and younger faces while reshaping the party apparatus.

Notably, no Cabinet expansion or reshuffle has taken place since the BJP-led NDA government returned to power for a third consecutive term in June 2024.

Focus On Upcoming Elections

The BJP is now preparing for several major electoral battles, including the 2027 Assembly elections, Presidential election and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat are scheduled for 2027. Political analysts believe leaders from these poll-bound states could find a place in both the revamped Union Cabinet and the new BJP national team.

With multiple vacancies, organisational changes and electoral considerations at play, a major reshuffle in both the Modi government and the BJP organisation appears increasingly likely.
