A controversy has emerged during the first phase of India’s upcoming digital census after a major mapping error was detected on the self-enumeration portal for Census 2027. The town of Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh was incorrectly displayed as Medog, a region under Chinese control, triggering widespread concern.
The issue was first flagged by retired Air Force officer Mohonto Pangning Pao, who shared screenshots on social media. He pointed out that the incorrect location prevented him from completing the self-enumeration process. His post quickly went viral, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about data accuracy and national sovereignty.
Many social media users viewed the error as more than a technical glitch, given China’s repeated claims over parts of Arunachal Pradesh. Some even described it as a “virtual surrender of territory,” highlighting the sensitivity of the issue.
The error showed Pasighat as Medog, located in territory administered by China, intensifying concerns due to the geopolitical context. As reactions grew online, demands for immediate corrective action increased.
Responding promptly, the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner issued a clarification, stating that it was a technical mapping error. Officials confirmed that the problem was resolved the same day in coordination with the mapping service provider.
The incident comes at a time when India is moving toward a fully digital census system for the first time, allowing citizens to fill in their details online. While the initiative aims to modernize data collection, the episode underscores how even minor technical inaccuracies in digital platforms can trigger major controversies, especially when linked to sensitive territorial issues.
