Assam Assembly: Wajed Ali Choudhury Appointed Leader of Opposition, Congress Strengthens Legislative Leadership

Senior Congress leader Wajed Ali Choudhury has officially assumed the position of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in theĀ Assam Legislative Assembly, marking a significant development in the state's political landscape.
The appointment was formally announced by the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday through an official communication. According to the announcement, Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass entrusted Choudhury with the responsibility of leading the opposition benches in the 126-member House.
The decision comes shortly after the Congress Legislature Party (Indian National Congress) selected Choudhury as its leader on May 26. During the same meeting, senior Congress MLA Joy Prakash Das was appointed deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party.
Congress Emerges as Largest Opposition Party in Assam
With Congress securing 19 seats in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, the party emerged as the largest opposition force in the state. Choudhury's appointment formally establishes him as the principal voice of the opposition in the Assembly.
Political observers believe the experienced Congress leader will play a crucial role in scrutinizing government policies, raising public concerns, and leading debates on key legislative and governance issues.
NDA Secured Massive Victory in Assam Assembly Elections
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising theĀ Bharatiya Janata Party,, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodoland People's Front (BPF), registered a landslide victory in the Assembly polls.
The alliance captured a record 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP emerged as the dominant political force with 82 seats, while AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
Opposition Strength in Assam Assembly
Apart from Congress's 19 seats, Raijor Dal secured two seats as part of a six-party opposition alliance.
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which contested independently, won two seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed to secure one seat.
Key Role Ahead for Wajed Ali Choudhury
As the newly appointed Leader of the Opposition, Wajed Ali Choudhury is expected to spearhead the opposition's strategy inside the Assam Legislative Assembly.
