Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday carried out a major expansion of his Council of Ministers, inducting 12 new members into the Assam Government Cabinet and increasing the total strength of the ministry to 17.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir in Guwahati, where Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly inducted ministers. Of the 12 legislators sworn in, 11 belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while one represents the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key ally in the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Speaking after the ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the newly constituted Cabinet as a balanced and inclusive team representing different regions and communities of Assam.
He expressed confidence that the collective experience and leadership of the ministers would accelerate the state's journey toward becoming a developed Assam.
The Cabinet expansion comes less than a month after Sarma assumed office for a second consecutive term on May 12. During the initial swearing-in ceremony, only four ministers besides the Chief Minister had taken oath, including BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, AGP chief Atul Bora, and BPF leader Charan Bodo.
Former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, who joined the State Cabinet for the first time, remains one of the prominent faces in the government.
Among the newly inducted ministers are several experienced legislators and senior BJP leaders, including Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Jayanta Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, Pijush Hazarika and Ranoj Pegu. AGP leader Keshab Mahanta was also inducted into the expanded ministry.
The new Cabinet additionally includes Nilima Devi, a first-time MLA, former Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Daimary, former Assam Assembly Speaker Sushanta Borgohain, and Ashwini Ray Sarkar.
The expansion follows the BJP-led NDA's emphatic victory in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably retaining power in the northeastern state. The BJP won 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) secured 10 seats each.
In the opposition ranks, the Congress emerged with 19 seats. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal won two seats each, while the Trinamool Congress managed to secure one seat.
According to constitutional provisions, Assam can have a maximum of 19 ministers, including the Chief Minister. Following the latest Cabinet expansion, only two positions remain vacant in the 126-member Assembly's ministerial quota.
The Assam Cabinet Expansion 2026 is being viewed as a strategic move by the BJP leadership to strengthen governance, improve regional representation, and accelerate the implementation of development initiatives across the state.
