Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday asserted that Assam is witnessing unprecedented economic growth, with the state’s unincorporated sector expanding at nearly double the national average. The Assam Chief Minister said the northeastern state is now emerging as one of India’s fastest-growing economies due to rapid digitalisation, financial inclusion and infrastructure development.
Sharing fresh economic data, Sarma said Assam currently has 13.71 lakh enterprises operating in the unincorporated sector. According to the Chief Minister, around 94.6 percent of these businesses are now connected to the banking system, indicating a major rise in financial access, MSME growth and digital transactions across Assam.
The Assam government also claimed that the state is among the top three most digitised states in India. Sarma further stated that Assam currently ranks first in urban commercial infrastructure development, reflecting the state government's aggressive push toward economic expansion and smart urban growth.
“Assam's unincorporated sector is not a story of catching up — it is a story of a state that has decided what it wants to become,” Sarma wrote on social media while highlighting Assam’s rising business ecosystem and investment climate.
The remarks come as the BJP-led Assam government continues to focus heavily on infrastructure projects, startup promotion, ease of doing business, industrial investment and digital governance initiatives.
Experts believe the rapid expansion of Assam’s unincorporated sector could significantly strengthen the Northeast economy and attract fresh domestic and foreign investments into the region. Increased banking connectivity, digital payment adoption and commercial infrastructure are being seen as major drivers behind Assam’s economic transformation.
The Assam government has in recent years intensified efforts to improve roads, logistics, urban development, trade connectivity and employment generation. The administration has also promoted MSMEs, entrepreneurship and technology-based services to strengthen economic activity in both urban and rural areas.
Political observers say the latest economic claims are part of the government’s broader narrative projecting Assam as a major investment destination in Northeast India.
