Assam Flood Alert: High Alert Issued After Flash Floods Hit Arunachal's Lower Subansiri, Brahmaputra Water Levels Likely to Rise

The Assam government on the basis of India Meteorological Department (IMD) report on Wednesday sounded a high alert after torrential rainfall triggered flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Subansiri district. Authorities fear that the heavy rainfall in upstream areas could significantly impact downstream districts in Assam, leading to a sharp rise in river water levels.

According to official sources, meteorological data from Guwahati and Itanagar weather centres revealed that Yazali in Lower Subansiri received nearly 72.8 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, with most of the rain recorded between 6 am and 9 am on June 24.

Flash Floods Hit Panyor Hydroelectric Project Area

Satellite and radar assessments confirmed that intense rainfall caused flash floods and increased river discharge in upper catchment areas. The flash floods particularly affected the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project region.

Authorities opened one spillway gate of the hydropower project to release excess water after a sudden surge in inflows. Reports from Yazali indicated that debris-laden floodwaters damaged houses, roads and other public infrastructure.

Media reports suggested that three persons have gone missing, although officials are yet to officially confirm casualties.

Assam Districts Likely to Face Flood Threat

The Assam government warned that heavy rainfall in upper catchments may result in rising water levels and stronger currents in the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries.

Districts likely to be affected first include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Sonitpur. The flood wave is expected to travel further downstream and may reach Dhubri within the next one to two days.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Directs Maximum Preparedness

The state government stated that the situation is being monitored at the highest level. On the instructions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Secretary has directed all concerned departments and district administrations to remain on maximum alert.

District officials have been instructed to maintain constant vigilance and take preventive measures in vulnerable areas.

SDRF, NDRF Teams Kept Ready

Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency agencies have been kept on standby for immediate deployment.

Field-level officers have also been directed to continuously monitor river conditions and vulnerable locations.

Public Advisory Issued for Flood-Prone Areas

Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and move to safer places whenever instructed by local authorities. The government has also urged people to avoid entering flooded areas and refrain from travelling in country boats or small vessels across the Brahmaputra and other rivers due to the expected increase in water currents.

Officials said the Assam government will continue to issue timely advisories and updates while maintaining close coordination with all concerned agencies to ensure public safety.
