Assam Flood Death Toll Climbs to 78; IMD Predicts Fresh Heavy Rain Across Northeast

The flood crisis in Assam has intensified after three more people lost their lives, taking the 2026 monsoon flood death toll to 78. At the same time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam and neighbouring northeastern states over the next few days, raising concerns about fresh flooding, flash floods and landslides.

According to the latest bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the newest fatalities include two deaths in Sivasagar district and one in Golaghat district. The fresh casualties have pushed this year's flood-related death count in Assam to 78.

The disaster management authority reported that 3,00,031 people continue to suffer the impact of floods across seven districts—Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath and Kamrup Metropolitan.

Floodwaters have inundated 21 revenue circles and 551 villages, while nearly 21,523 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged, causing widespread crop losses and disrupting normal life.

IMD Warns of Fresh Spell of Heavy Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that another active weather system will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland from July 30 to August 1.

The weather agency cautioned that the fresh rain could trigger:

  • Flash floods

  • Urban flooding

  • Waterlogging

  • Landslides

  • River water level rise

  • Traffic disruptions

Upper Assam districts are expected to witness the greatest impact as weather systems over neighbouring states strengthen rainfall activity.

Orange Alert for Tinsukia

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Tinsukia district in Assam.

Meanwhile, Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts in Nagaland are also under weather alerts, as heavy rainfall and runoff from these areas may worsen the flood situation in Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat districts.

Heavy Rain Forecast for Arunachal Pradesh

The weather office has also forecast widespread rainfall across East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Runoff from these hill districts is likely to affect downstream areas including Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur in Assam.

Several districts are expected to receive 6–11 cm of rainfall daily, while isolated places, especially Papumpare, could witness 12–20 cm of rainfall, categorised as very heavy precipitation.

Authorities on High Alert

ASDMA has instructed all district administrations to remain fully prepared for any deterioration in the weather situation.

People residing in low-lying flood-prone regions and landslide-prone hill areas have been advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and strictly follow official weather advisories and evacuation instructions.

With the southwest monsoon remaining highly active across the Northeast, authorities fear that fresh rainfall could significantly aggravate the existing flood situation in Assam over the coming days.
