Assam Flood News: Over 23,000 Affected as Heavy Rain Triggers Urban Flooding in Barak Valley

Continuous heavy rainfall caused severe urban flooding across several districts of Assam on Friday, affecting more than 23,000 people in the Barak Valley region, officials said.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, flood-like conditions and massive waterlogging were reported mainly from Silchar in Cachar district and the Badarpur and Sribhumi Sadar areas of Sribhumi district after incessant rainfall lashed southern Assam.

The latest ASDMA urban flood report confirmed that Cachar district, Sribhumi district and Kamrup Metropolitan district were hit by flash floods and severe waterlogging, with Barak Valley emerging as the worst-affected region in the state.

Silchar Flood Situation Worsens

The worst-hit areas in Silchar included Rangirkhari, Ambikapatty, Shillong Patty, Bilpar Road, Ashram Road, Hailakandi Road and Saratpally, where continuous rainfall submerged roads and disrupted normal life.

Urban Flooding Hits Sribhumi District

In neighbouring Sribhumi district, nearly 8,002 people were affected in the Badarpur and Sribhumi Sadar revenue circles due to overflowing drains and heavy rainfall.

Badarpur town, Raghunathpur, Debendranagar, Junbosti, Alakulipur, Deorail and Mission Road witnessed severe waterlogging as rainwater inundated several residential and market areas.

The ASDMA report stated that a total of 23,619 people across Assam were affected by urban floods, with the majority of cases reported from Barak Valley districts.

SDRF Rescues Flood-Hit Residents

Teams of the State Disaster Response Force launched rescue operations in flood-hit areas of Sribhumi district.

Authorities deployed rescue boats to evacuate stranded residents, and at least 53 people along with three animals were safely rescued from inundated locations.

Officials confirmed that no deaths due to flooding had been reported till Friday evening.

The ASDMA also noted that “urban flash flood” conditions were specifically recorded in Badarpur town after continuous heavy rainfall.
