Assam Flood Relief: CM Himanta Launches ₹75,000 Aid as Death Toll Reaches 85

The Assam government has initiated the first phase of financial assistance for families devastated by the recent floods, providing an interim relief package worth nearly ₹75,000 per eligible household. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally launched the distribution programme from Dibrugarh on Monday while continuing his inspection of flood-ravaged districts.

The relief initiative comes as the state's flood disaster continues to claim lives. Officials confirmed that the death toll has increased to 85 after three more people lost their lives in Sivasagar district on Sunday.

Assam Government Starts ₹75,000 Interim Flood Assistance

According to the state administration, the first instalment of financial support targets families whose homes have suffered severe damage due to the floods.

Eligible households in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts will receive ₹15,000 under one relief component, along with additional government assistance that raises the total interim support to around ₹75,000 per family.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government remains committed to ensuring timely relief and rehabilitation for every affected household.

Flood Situation Improves Slightly but Sivasagar Remains Worst-Hit

While floodwaters have gradually receded in several areas, the disaster continues to affect more than 1.36 lakh people across five districts.

Among the affected regions:

  • Sivasagar: Over 55,000 affected residents

  • Charaideo: Around 40,000 affected people

  • Jorhat: More than 22,000 residents impacted

Floodwaters are still disrupting normal life in Charaideo, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar, where authorities continue rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations.

Relief Camps Shelter Nearly 14,000 People

The Assam government is currently operating 54 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the affected districts.

Officials said these camps are providing shelter, food, drinking water and essential supplies to 13,771 displaced residents, while emergency teams continue monitoring vulnerable locations.

Thousands of Hectares of Farmland Still Under Water

The floods have caused extensive agricultural damage across Upper Assam.

Government figures show that nearly 15,422 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged, creating significant losses for farmers.

Meanwhile, the Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, keeping authorities on high alert.

Chief Minister to Review Rehabilitation Measures

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to visit several flood-affected areas in Sivasagar district to inspect rehabilitation work, assess damage, and interact directly with residents affected by the disaster.

The state government has intensified restoration efforts even as rescue agencies continue monitoring water levels in vulnerable regions.

Assam Flood Crisis Continues

Despite a reduction in the number of flood victims compared to previous days, the overall situation remains critical. With 85 confirmed deaths, more than 1.36 lakh people still affected, widespread crop losses and thousands displaced, relief and rehabilitation operations remain the government's top priority.
