Assam Flood Situation Worsens: Over 45,000 Affected, One Missing; Amit Shah Assures Full Central Support

The flood situation in Assam has turned critical, with more than 45,500 people affected across five districts and one person reported missing as incessant rainfall continues to trigger widespread inundation across the state.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floodwaters have severely impacted the districts of Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Chirang and Nalbari. Officials confirmed that a person went missing after being swept away by strong currents in the Jonai subdivision of Dhemaji district. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to trace the missing individual.
Dhemaji Emerges as Worst-Hit District
Government data revealed that 45,515 people are currently suffering due to the floods, a sharp rise from the previous day when around 22,000 residents were affected.

Dhemaji remains the worst-affected district, accounting for over 41,000 affected people. Dibrugarh has reported nearly 4,000 affected residents, while close to 800 people have been impacted in Chirang district.
Floodwaters have submerged 257 villages across Assam, damaging vast stretches of agricultural land. Authorities said around 4,278.52 hectares of cropland have been affected due to the rising water levels.
Amit Shah Reviews Flood Situation, Assures Full Support
Amid the worsening crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a telephonic conversation with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assess the flood situation.
During the discussion, the Union Home Minister reviewed the extent of damage caused by overflowing rivers and examined the ongoing rescue and relief measures.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later stated that the Centre has assured Assam of all possible assistance to tackle the flood emergency.
Ministers Deployed to Supervise Relief Operations
To strengthen relief and rehabilitation measures, the Assam government has directed Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta to remain stationed in Dhemaji district.
The state government said its immediate priority is to ensure that rescue teams and relief materials reach every affected family without delay. Officials are also working to restore disrupted road connectivity and reinforce anti-erosion measures in vulnerable areas.
Relief Camps Operational Across Flood-Hit Areas
ASDMA said district administrations are currently operating 12 relief camps and relief distribution centres in affected districts. A total of 655 displaced people have taken shelter in these facilities.
During the last 24 hours, authorities distributed:
- 519.8 quintals of rice
- 93.52 quintals of pulses
- 28.2 quintals of salt
- 2,815.57 litres of mustard oil
The assistance has been provided to thousands of flood-affected families across the state.
Infrastructure and Livestock Suffer Heavy Losses
The disaster management authority reported significant damage to roads, bridges, embankments and other public infrastructure in several districts.
Officials also confirmed that the Disang River is flowing above the danger mark at Nanglamuraghat, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
The floods have severely impacted the livestock sector as well, with more than 76,000 domestic animals and poultry affected statewide.
More Rain Forecast, Authorities Issue Alert
With weather forecasts prediction by India Meteorological Department (IMD) continued rainfall in the coming days, the Assam government has intensified monitoring across vulnerable districts.
Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain vigilant and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities.
