Assam Floods: Nearly 16,000 Affected in Dhemaji as Rivers Overflow, NH-515 Submerged

Relentless rainfall along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border has triggered a major flood crisis in Assam's Dhemaji district, affecting nearly 16,000 residents, inundating dozens of villages, disrupting transport networks and damaging critical infrastructure.

According to official estimates, incessant rain in the upper catchment areas caused several rivers to swell beyond danger levels, leaving vast stretches of residential areas and agricultural land submerged.

Leku River Breaches Banks, NH-515 Goes Under Water

The situation turned alarming after the Leku River, originating in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh, overflowed and submerged portions of National Highway-515 near Leku. The flooding brought vehicular movement to a complete halt, severely affecting connectivity in the region.

Several border villages were inundated as rising floodwaters entered houses, damaged standing crops and submerged valuable property.

Local authorities are continuously monitoring embankments and vulnerable areas amid fears of further flooding if rainfall persists.

Six Rescued from Stranded Boats in Aie River

In another dramatic incident, six people, including two women, were rescued after two country boats became stranded in the swollen Aie River.

A joint rescue operation involving teams from the State Disaster Response Force (ASDMA) of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, police personnel and local volunteers successfully evacuated all stranded individuals after hours of coordinated efforts.

The rescue operation prevented what could have turned into a major tragedy.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Reviews Flood Situation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government is keeping a close watch on the evolving flood situation in Dhemaji.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Chief Minister expressed concern over the hardships faced by flood-affected residents and assured full government support.

Sarma also directed Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain and Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta to remain in Dhemaji and supervise relief and rehabilitation operations on the ground.

"We are leaving no stone unturned to reduce the impact of the floods and provide assistance to affected people," the Chief Minister said.

Nearly 16,000 People Hit Across 69 Villages

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that approximately 16,000 people across 69 villages under four revenue circles in Dhemaji district have been affected by the floods.

Relief and rescue measures are currently underway, while authorities continue to assess losses caused by the disaster.

Rail Services Suspended After Bridge Damage

Flood-related erosion has also severely impacted railway connectivity.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has suspended train services between Archipathar and Simen Chapari after riverbank erosion damaged a railway bridge.

Officials said passenger train operations on the route will remain suspended until further notice. Meanwhile, bus services and passenger help desks have been arranged to assist stranded travellers.
