With relentless rainfall (mausam.imd) worsening the flood situation across Upper Assam, the Assam Government has activated its emergency response mechanism by requesting the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to remain on standby for possible large-scale rescue and evacuation operations.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on Saturday, stating that the administration is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving flood emergency affecting several districts.

Flood Conditions Worsen In Sivasagar, Charaideo And Jorhat

According to the Chief Minister, continuous heavy rainfall has significantly aggravated flooding in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, leading to widespread waterlogging and increasing the risk to thousands of residents.

Sharing an update on social media platform X, Sarma said the state government has formally sought the readiness of the Army and Air Force so that rescue teams can be deployed immediately if the situation deteriorates further.

The move reflects the government's effort to ensure swift evacuation of stranded people and strengthen disaster response capabilities in vulnerable areas.

Senior Ministers Sent To Oversee Relief Operations

To accelerate relief measures, the Chief Minister has deputed senior cabinet ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta and Sushanta Borgohain to visit the flood-hit districts without delay.

The ministers have been instructed to:

  • Conduct on-ground assessment of flood conditions.

  • Monitor rescue and rehabilitation activities.

  • Coordinate with district administrations.

  • Ensure relief materials reach every affected household promptly.

  • Address immediate public grievances.

Reiterating his government's commitment, Himanta Biswa Sarma said protecting people's lives remains the administration's highest priority.

He assured that the state government is maintaining continuous surveillance over the flood situation and will take every necessary step to safeguard citizens while ensuring timely delivery of relief and rehabilitation assistance.

Officials continue to monitor river levels and weather conditions as persistent rainfall keeps several parts of Upper Assam under flood threat.
