Preparatory processes for the deployment of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections will commence on March 31 across all 126 constituencies, officials confirmed.
The commissioning exercise will be undertaken at venues identified by District Election Officers, under the supervision of engineers and technical experts from Electronics Corporation of India Limited, in strict adherence to the operational protocols laid down by the Election Commission of India.
Authorities stated that the procedure will be conducted in the presence of candidates and their authorised representatives, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process.
A total of 41,353 Ballot Units (BUs), 45,572 Control Units (CUs), and 44,830 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units are being prepared for polling purposes. Additionally, a considerable reserve stock has been earmarked, comprising 9,863 BUs, 14,082 CUs, and 13,340 VVPAT units to address contingencies.
As part of the commissioning protocol, symbol loading into VVPAT machines will be carried out using specialised Symbol Loading Units (SLUs), with candidates and their representatives permitted to oversee and verify the process.
To further bolster confidence in the system, provisions have been made for candidates or their agents to randomly select up to five per cent of the EVMs and VVPAT units for mock poll verification.
Polling for the 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, while counting of votes will take place on May 4. The election assumes added importance as it will be the first in the state following the recent delimitation exercise.
