Assam Rifles Launches Biometric Registration Drive for Myanmar Refugees in Manipur Under Operation Anchor Phase-II

Border Security Strengthened as Nearly 500 Displaced Myanmar Nationals Registered in Kamjong District

In a major step towards strengthening border governance and enhancing internal security, the Assam Rifles has launched an extensive identification, verification and biometric registration campaign for displaced nationals from Myanmar taking shelter in Manipur.

The exercise was conducted on Monday in close coordination with the district administration, police authorities and the medical department of Kamjong district, according to an official statement issued by the paramilitary force on Tuesday.

Registration Conducted in Border Villages of Kamjong

Kamjong district, located along the Indo-Myanmar border in eastern Manipur, has witnessed an influx of displaced Myanmar nationals fleeing prolonged instability and conflict in their home country.

Authorities carried out the documentation and biometric enrolment process in Phaikoh, Shangkhalok and Aloyo villages, where several displaced families have been residing in temporary shelters.

A joint team comprising around 40 government officials and security personnel undertook detailed identity verification, biometric enrolment and demographic data collection during the operation.

Officials confirmed that nearly 500 individuals were successfully registered, leading to the creation of a verified and centralized database aimed at improving administrative planning, humanitarian assistance and security monitoring.

Operation Anchor Phase-II Focuses on Accountability and Security

The latest verification exercise forms a crucial component of Operation Anchor Phase-II, a structured civil-military initiative designed to balance humanitarian support with national security requirements along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB).

According to officials, the first phase of Operation Anchor primarily focused on enhancing border security through advanced electronic surveillance systems, intensified patrolling and strategic border fencing to curb illegal infiltration and unauthorized cross-border movement.

With the commencement of Phase-II, authorities have shifted their focus toward maintaining comprehensive records of individuals granted temporary refuge inside Indian territory.

Biometric Database to Aid Governance and Relief Distribution

The Assam Rifles stated that establishing a biometric database would help eliminate anonymity among displaced populations, ensure transparent distribution of humanitarian and medical assistance, and provide both the Central and State governments with reliable data for informed policymaking related to border management and internal security.

Security experts believe that the initiative will significantly strengthen border governance while ensuring that humanitarian assistance reaches genuine beneficiaries in a transparent and accountable manner.
