Assembly Polls: NDA trending in Assam

The electoral battle for Assam has reached its decisive phase as counting of votes for all 126 Assembly constituencies began on Monday (May 4, 2026), amid tight security and heightened political anticipation.

The outcome will determine whether the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and spearheaded by the Bharatiya Janata Party, secures a third consecutive term in power, or if the Congress-led opposition alliance stages a comeback after a decade.

On the other side, the opposition coalition—Indian National Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASM)—under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi is aiming to unseat the incumbent government and reclaim power.

Both camps have exuded strong confidence ahead of the results, with each claiming it will comfortably cross the simple majority mark of 64 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP-led NDA has projected an emphatic victory, with Chief Minister Sarma expressing confidence that the alliance could win close to 100 seats. Mirroring this optimism, the Congress-led ASM has also claimed it could secure a similar tally, signalling a fiercely contested electoral outcome.

To ensure a smooth and secure counting process, authorities have deployed 25 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to guard strongrooms and counting centres across the state. Multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain the integrity of the counting process.

With both alliances projecting sweeping victories and political stakes running high, the counting day is being closely watched not just within Assam but across the country. The final verdict will play a crucial role in shaping the political trajectory of the state for the next five years.
