Myanmar's former civilian leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi has appeared in public for the first time in almost five years, following the release of official photographs by the country's military administration. The rare images have attracted global attention, as Suu Kyi has remained largely isolated since the armed forces seized power in February 2021.
The photographs show Suu Kyi meeting Arno de Baeck, the Myanmar representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (icrc), marking one of her very few documented interactions with an international organization since her detention.
Military Confirms Meeting but Withholds Details
According to the military authorities, the meeting was held on Monday morning. However, officials did not reveal the location of the meeting or disclose what subjects were discussed between Suu Kyi and the ICRC representative.
The absence of detailed information has fueled international curiosity regarding the purpose of the meeting and the current conditions of Myanmar's imprisoned democratic leader.
81st Birthday Celebrated During the Meeting
Among the released images, Suu Kyi is also seen cutting a birthday cake to celebrate her 81st birthday. She appeared smiling and composed, offering the first visual confirmation of her condition in years.

Detained Since Military Overthrew Elected Government
Aung San Suu Kyi has remained in custody since February 2021, when Myanmar's military removed her elected government from power, triggering nationwide protests, armed resistance and prolonged political instability.
Since her arrest, she has faced multiple legal cases and has spent years in detention with extremely limited access to lawyers, family members and the international community.

The latest images represent one of the rarest public glimpses of the former leader since the coup and are expected to intensify global discussions over her continued imprisonment and Myanmar's ongoing political crisis.
Why This Matters
The release of these photographs comes at a time when Myanmar continues to face international scrutiny over human rights, democratic governance and the treatment of political prisoners. Observers believe the images could influence renewed diplomatic efforts and humanitarian engagement with the military-led administration.
