Hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered across Iran's capital on Monday as the funeral procession of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei passed through Tehran, creating one of the country's largest public gatherings in recent decades.
The funeral procession covered nearly 10 kilometres through central Tehran, with state media describing the event as the biggest public gathering in modern Iranian history. Thousands of people lined roads, rooftops and public spaces to pay their final respects.
Huge Crowds Slow Funeral Procession
The extraordinary turnout forced the vehicle carrying Khamenei's coffin to move at an extremely slow pace. At several locations, particularly along Azadi Street, security personnel temporarily halted the procession because of the overwhelming number of mourners.

Authorities appealed to people to remain along the designated route, announcing that Khamenei's body would later be transported by helicopter over parts of the city so that people standing farther away could also offer their final tribute.
Final Religious Rites in Qom Before Burial
Following the ceremonies in Tehran, Khamenei's body is scheduled to be taken to the holy city of Qom, where religious rituals will be performed. He will then be laid to rest in Mashhad, his hometown and one of Iran's most important religious centres.

Despite temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius, massive crowds continued to attend the funeral procession throughout the day. Firefighters sprayed water to cool participants, while volunteers distributed drinking water, cold beverages and watermelon to help people cope with the heat.

Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminiya said the Iranian Armed Forces are using the current ceasefire period to enhance military preparedness. He warned that any military action by the United States or Israel would receive a firm and decisive response.
