The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the tenure of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar by one year, keeping him in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
A senior BCCI official told ANI that Agarkar’s tenure has been extended rather than concluded, and he will continue for a fourth year, subject to performance.
As per BCCI regulations, a selector can serve a maximum of four years. Agarkar was initially appointed in 2023 for a two-year term and received his first extension in 2025. With this latest decision, his tenure will now run through 2027, completing the full four-year limit.
Agarkar’s stint as Chief Selector has been marked by strong results. Between October 2023 and March 2026, the teams selected under his leadership reached the finals of four ICC tournaments. India went on to win three major titles—two ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophies in 2024 and 2026, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. The team also finished runners-up in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, losing the final to Australia.
Overall, the extension reflects confidence in Agarkar’s performance and continuity in India’s team selection strategy ahead of the next ODI World Cup.
