Bengal votes on Wednesday; EC acts on Mamata post row

Voting for 142 Assembly seats in West Bengal is set to take place on April 29, with campaigning for this phase concluding on Monday evening.

The Election Commission of India has directed police to take strict action over objectionable social media content allegedly targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sharing a screenshot, the All India Trinamool Congress claimed that a BJP supporter from Uttar Pradesh had posted a derogatory and obscene caricature of Banerjee online. The party said the content was later removed following a formal complaint.

In the final hours of campaigning, Mamata Banerjee held a major roadshow in South Kolkata, covering a 6-km stretch from Sukanta Setu to Gopalnagar Crossing, drawing large crowds of supporters.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing a public meeting in Behala, assured voters of strong security arrangements. He said central forces would remain deployed in the state for at least seven days even after the elections. Urging people to vote without fear, Shah emphasized that the Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to ensure peaceful polling.

The outcome of the April 29 voting is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the electoral results and determining the path to power in the state.
