Bharat Ratna Scientist CNR Rao Faces Voter Roll Name Discrepancy Notice

A controversy surrounding Bharat Ratna-winning scientist C.N.R. Rao and Karnataka’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has drawn attention after a reported discrepancy was found in the spelling of his name.

Initial reports suggested that Rao had been summoned for a hearing in Bengaluru over a mismatch between his old and revised voter records. However,  the Greater Bengaluru Authority chief commissioner M Maheshwar Rao later turned 180 degree and clarified that no notice had been issued to C.N.R. Rao in connection with the alleged discrepancy.

CNR Rao Name Mismatch Explained

The controversy reportedly arose because Rao’s name appeared differently in electoral records. One version was listed as “ProfCNR Rao”, while another reportedly showed “Proff CNR Rao”, with an additional “f” in the title.

Reports had indicated that the discrepancy could lead to a hearing at the electoral office in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. Rao’s office, however, said it had not received any physical or email notice and had only seen information appearing online.

The latest clarification from the Bengaluru authority means that the earlier reports of an official notice to Rao should be treated with caution.

Karnataka SIR and Voter Roll Verification

The issue has emerged amid Karnataka’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, a process aimed at checking and updating voter records.

The Election Commission’s voter service portal currently provides dedicated facilities for the 2026 SIR, including voter-name searches and submission of documents against notices.

The SIR exercise has generated considerable public attention in Karnataka, with several prominent personalities becoming associated with voter-list discrepancies or objections.

Other Prominent Names Linked to Karnataka SIR Issues

Rahul Dravid: His name was reportedly removed from his previous address after he shifted residence, while the entry was not immediately reflected at his new address.

Prakash Raj: His voter record became controversial after it was reportedly marked as “shifted” during address verification. He subsequently participated in protests questioning aspects of the SIR process.

Raghav Chadha: A technical objection was reportedly raised during address verification in connection with the electoral-roll revision.

Ram Jethmalani: His name was reportedly affected by a technical issue during voter-roll updating.

These cases have added to wider public discussion about the accuracy of electoral databases and the process for correcting voter records.

Who Is C.N.R. Rao?

Professor C.N.R. Rao is one of India’s most prominent scientists and a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, which he was awarded in 2014. The Indian Institute of Science lists him among its Bharat Ratna awardees.

Rao has made major contributions to solid-state chemistry, materials science and nanomaterials. His research has covered areas including graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanowires, nanocrystals and other advanced materials.

He founded the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit (SSCU) at the Indian Institute of Science in November 1976. IISc describes the unit as a major interdisciplinary research centre working across chemistry, physics and materials science.

IISc records also describe C.N.R. Rao as a former Director of the institute and note his extensive scientific contributions.

Why the CNR Rao SIR Issue Matters

The episode highlights the importance of accurate voter records during large-scale electoral-roll revision exercises. Even minor differences in names, addresses or other database entries can trigger verification procedures or public confusion.

For voters, the Election Commission’s online services provide mechanisms to check electoral information and respond to notices issued during the SIR process.

The CNR Rao episode also demonstrates why reports concerning electoral notices should be checked against official clarifications before conclusions are drawn.
