A tragic road accident in Assam’s Tamulpur district claimed the life of a young Bihu artiste and left 11 others injured after a head-on collision between a mini bus and a trailer truck on Friday night, police said.
The deceased, 25-year-old Nishamoni Haloi, was travelling with her troupe to a performance in the Noakhata area when the accident occurred. She died on the spot, while several others sustained injuries.
Around 30 members of the troupe—including female dancers, male ‘dhulias’ (drummers), and other artistes—were on board the vehicle. The group comprised performers from different parts of the state.
Those critically injured have been shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, while others are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom across the region, especially as it comes during the festive period of Rongali Bihu. Nishamoni was widely known not only as a Bihu dancer but also as a performer of traditional ‘Nagara Naam’.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing her as a promising artiste whose life was tragically cut short. He extended condolences to her family and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
