Elangbam Johnson resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday, accusing the Manipur government of failing to fulfil the expectations and aspirations of the people amid the prolonged ethnic conflict in the state.
Addressing a press conference, Elangbam announced that he was stepping down from his post as BJP state spokesperson and also ending his association with the party.
Elangbam, who had contested the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections as a BJP candidate, said the party had failed to move in accordance with the wishes of the people since violence erupted in the state on May 3, 2023.
He stated that after discussions with his supporters and party workers in Keisamthong, he decided to resign from the BJP and surrender his primary membership of the party.
According to Elangbam, the main reason behind his resignation was the government’s inability to address public expectations and restore normalcy following the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur.
The northeastern state has witnessed prolonged unrest since clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023.
More than 260 people have lost their lives in the violence, while thousands of others have been displaced from their homes due to the continuing ethnic conflict in the state.
