BJP Pitches TTAADC Upgrade to Territorial Council Ahead of Polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party has unveiled a significant institutional proposal ahead of the upcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), scheduled for April 12.

In its election manifesto released at Khumulwng on Sunday, the party announced its intention to transform the TTAADC into a Territorial Council.

The announcement marks a notable shift in the governance framework envisioned for the tribal regions of Tripura.

Constitutional experts point out that an Autonomous District Council is constituted under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, which grants limited self-governance with substantial oversight by the Governor.

In contrast, a Territorial Council can be established through a legislative process in the state assembly. Such councils typically enjoy a broader administrative mandate, often functioning with a more structured governmental framework and comparatively reduced gubernatorial intervention.

Another critical distinction lies in representation: while an Autonomous District Council is capped at a maximum of 30 members, a Territorial Council can accommodate a significantly larger body, allowing for expanded political participation.

By advancing this proposal, the BJP appears to be making a calculated strategic move aimed at reshaping the political and administrative dynamics of Tripura’s hill regions ahead of the crucial ADC elections
