The political negotiations between the
BJP and Tipra Motha in Tripura have entered a crucial phase with BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh arriving in the state on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming TTAADC Village Committee elections.
Santosh’s visit assumes significance as the BJP and Tipra Motha continue discussions over a possible electoral understanding for the village polls. BJP’s North-East coordinator Sambit Patra, along with senior state leaders Rabindra Raju and Rajdeep Roy, has also reached Tripura as part of the central leadership’s two-day visit.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the BJP’s central leaders at the State Guest House near Khajur Bagan in Agartala.
BJP-Tipra Motha Alliance Talks Reach Crucial Stage
The BJP and Tipra Motha have held several rounds of discussions, including meetings in New Delhi, but a final seat-sharing arrangement has not yet been publicly announced.
The latest visit by B.L. Santosh is therefore being viewed as an important development in the ongoing negotiations. Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier indicated that discussions with Tipra Motha were continuing and expressed the expectation that the BJP would contest the village elections together with its allies.
According to the Chief Minister, the precise electoral arrangement will become clear once the negotiations reach their final stage.
Tipra Motha Maintains Stand on Tiprasa Accord
While the BJP is pursuing an alliance formula, Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has maintained that his party’s position will depend on progress towards implementing the commitments made under the Tiprasa Accord.
Debbarma has made it clear that Tipra Motha wants concrete action or a written assurance concerning the constitutional safeguards promised to Tripura’s indigenous population before entering into an electoral understanding.
The issue has emerged as one of the central points in the BJP-Tipra Motha negotiations. Earlier reports had also indicated that Tipra Motha was seeking progress on issues connected with the tripartite agreement before considering a seat-sharing arrangement.
What Is the Tipra Accord?
The tripartite agreement involving the Government of India, Government of Tripura and Tipra Motha was signed in 2022 to address issues concerning the development and interests of Tripura’s indigenous communities.
Tipra Motha has repeatedly linked any broader political understanding with the implementation of commitments concerning constitutional safeguards and the rights of the indigenous population.
Village Committee Elections Add Political Pressure
The negotiations have gained urgency because elections to 587 Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are scheduled for September 28, 2026. The polls are particularly significant because the Village Committee elections had remained pending for several years.

Both BJP and Tipra Motha are therefore working to establish their electoral strategies before campaigning intensifies.
The BJP has already stepped up organisational preparations for the Village Committee polls, while Tipra Motha has continued to emphasise its grassroots strength across the TTAADC areas.
Will BJP and Tipra Motha Finalise an Alliance?
The arrival of B.L. Santosh and other senior BJP leaders has increased speculation that the two parties could move closer to a final electoral arrangement.
However, the alliance remains dependent on negotiations over political terms and Tipra Motha’s demands concerning the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord.
For the BJP, an alliance could strengthen its position in the tribal council areas. For Tipra Motha, any electoral arrangement would have to be weighed against its long-standing political demands and commitments to its indigenous support base.
The next two days of meetings could therefore prove decisive in determining whether BJP and Tipra Motha contest the Tripura Village Committee elections together or separately.
