BJP Unveils Assam Poll Manifesto with Big Promises

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, outlining an ambitious roadmap marked by large-scale investments, expanded welfare measures, and a stringent stance on illegal infiltration. The party pledged an investment of ₹5 lakh crore to transform Assam into India’s “eastern gateway” and committed to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within three months of returning to power.

The manifesto was released in Guwahati by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who highlighted the Centre’s sustained focus on the state. She underscored the frequency of visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contrasting it with that of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a long-time Rajya Sabha member from Assam. Sitharaman asserted that the state has witnessed marked improvements in security and welfare coverage under BJP governance.

Citing official data, she noted a significant decline in violence compared to the Congress era and highlighted the expansion of welfare initiatives, including the Jal Jeevan Mission, which now covers over 81% of households in the state with drinking water access.

A major highlight of the manifesto is the proposed ₹27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and testing facility by Tata Electronics in Morigaon, projected to produce 48 million chips per day and generate between 25,000 and 27,000 jobs. Sitharaman also pointed to Assam’s economic growth, noting a sharp rise in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and a 54% increase in per capita income over the past four years.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the party’s commitment to implementing the UCC within three months, excluding Sixth Schedule and tribal areas. He also emphasised stricter legal measures against what he termed “love jihad” and “land jihad,” along with intensified action against illegal immigration.

The manifesto proposes empowering district authorities to act decisively against illegal immigrants under existing legal frameworks and to accelerate eviction drives. Sarma stressed that infiltration remains an ongoing challenge due to India’s proximity to Bangladesh.

On the welfare front, the BJP pledged enhanced financial support for women and economically weaker sections. Plans include expanding the Orunodoi Scheme with increased monthly assistance and scaling up the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Scheme to create 40 lakh “Lakhpati Baideos.”

Additional commitments include the creation of two lakh government jobs over five years, a ₹18,000 crore investment in flood control, and a major push to strengthen healthcare and education infrastructure through a “One District, One Medical College, One University, One Engineering College” model.

Polling for the Assam Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
