BSF Cracks Down on Border Smuggling in Tripura; Bangladeshi Youth Killed, Barmij Cigarettes Recovered

A Bangladeshi youth was killed in BSFfiring incident along the India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura's Unakoti district, triggering heightened security measures and an official investigation. The incident occurred on Friday evening in the Latiyapura Gram Panchayat area under Irani Police Station near Kailashahar.
According to Police sources, the deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Mujibur Rahman Mujib, a resident of Dattagram village in Sharifpur Union under Kulaura Police Station of Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh. He was the son of Ajub Ali.
BSF Intercepts Suspected Smuggling Group Near Border
Preliminary reports indicate that a group of Bangladeshi nationals allegedly crossed into Indian territory near the Tripura-Bangladesh border on Friday evening. Security agencies suspect the group had gathered in the border zone for smuggling-related activities.
During a routine border patrol operation, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel reportedly challenged the group, leading to a tense situation. In the course of the operation, BSF jawans opened fire, and Mujibur Rahman sustained fatal injuries. Several others accompanying him reportedly managed to return to Bangladesh.
Local residents claimed that a few more individuals may have been injured during the incident. However, officials have not yet confirmed those reports.
Large Quantity of Smuggled Bidis Recovered
Following the operation, security personnel reportedly recovered a substantial quantity of bidis allegedly stored for illegal cross-border transportation. The seizure has further strengthened suspicions of an organized smuggling attempt along the sensitive India-Bangladesh frontier.
The body of the deceased was recovered at approximately 9:30 PM and shifted to Unakoti District Hospital in Bhagwannagar, Kailashahar.
Post-Mortem Conducted at Unakoti District Hospital
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Unakoti District Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Rohan Pal said that the body was jointly brought to the hospital by BSF personnel and Irani Police officials.
He stated that legal and administrative formalities could not be completed during the night, resulting in a delay in conducting the autopsy. A forensic team led by Dr. Suranjan Das carried out the post-mortem examination on Saturday.
Hospital sources revealed that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. The exact cause of death will be officially confirmed after the post-mortem report is released.
BSF-BGB Flag Meeting Likely for Handover of Body
Officials said that after completion of all legal procedures, the body will be handed over to Bangladesh authorities through a formal flag meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh BGB.
Security Intensified Along Tripura-Bangladesh Border
In the aftermath of the incident, security has been significantly strengthened across the border region. The BSF, Tripura Police, and district administration have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the firing.
The incident has once again drawn attention to border security challenges, illegal cross-border movement, and smuggling activities along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura.
