C. Joseph Vijay Sworn In as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Announces Major Welfare Decisions

C. Joseph Vijay officially took oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning, creating a historic moment in Tamil Nadu politics. The swearing-in ceremony began at 10:15 a.m. in Chennai in the presence of senior political leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

The rise of Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) marks the first time since 1967 that a non-DMK or non-AIADMK party has formed the government in Tamil Nadu.

Governor Interrupts Vijay During Oath Ceremony

During the oath-taking ceremony, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar interrupted Vijay after the actor-turned-politician reportedly went beyond the officially prescribed oath text. The Governor instructed him to continue reading only the approved constitutional lines.

Vijay stated during the oath:

“I, C. Joseph Vijay, will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India. As Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, I will uphold the unity and integrity of India and discharge my duties according to my conscience.”

Nine TVK Ministers Sworn Into Cabinet

Along with CM Vijay, nine ministers from the TVK party were also sworn into the Tamil Nadu cabinet. The ministers include N Anand, Adhav Arjun, Dr. KG Arunraj, KA Sengottaiyan, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr. TK Prabhu and Selvi S Keerthana.

Notably, no MLAs from alliance partners including Congress, CPI, CPM, VCK or IUML were included in the first cabinet.

Vijay Announces 200 Units Free Electricity and Anti-Drugs Squad

Immediately after assuming office, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay signed several important government files. The first decisions of the new TVK government included:

  • 200 units of free electricity for households
  • Formation of a special women’s security team
  • Creation of a statewide anti-drugs squad

These announcements are already generating massive discussion across Tamil Nadu and national political circles.

TVK Creates History in Tamil Nadu Elections

Vijay’s two-year-old political party TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly in its very first election campaign. Political analysts are calling it one of the biggest political breakthroughs in recent Indian electoral history.

On Saturday, Vijay met Governor Arlekar and submitted letters of support from TVK and alliance MLAs, after which he was formally invited to form the government.
