On the occasion of International Labour Day, CPIM Politburo member and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury strongly criticised the BJP-led government, alleging that workers and labourers across the country are facing continuous attacks on their rights and livelihoods under the present regime.
International Labour Day was observed across Tripura on May 1 along with the rest of the country. The CPM organised a programme at its state headquarters in Agartala on Thursday morning to mark the occasion.
During the event, Jitendra Chaudhury hoisted the party flag and paid tribute to workers who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for labour rights.
Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury said International Labour Day is celebrated every year to honour the martyrs of the historic Haymarket incident that took place in 1886 in Chicago, United States. Recalling the history behind the observance, he said thousands of workers had gathered at Haymarket demanding an eight-hour workday and better working conditions. The protest later turned violent after an unidentified bomb was allegedly thrown at police personnel surrounding the gathering, following which police opened fire on the workers, leading to several deaths and injuries.
He stated that the sacrifices made by workers during the Haymarket movement laid the foundation for labour rights movements across the world, and since then International Labour Day has been observed globally as a symbol of workers’ unity, struggle, and solidarity.
Launching a scathing attack on the BJP government, the CPM leader alleged that the Centre has adopted anti-worker policies and is continuously undermining the rights of labourers and working-class people. He further claimed that the government had even cancelled the Labour Day holiday, which he described as an insult to workers and their contributions to society.
Chaudhury alleged that working people in the country are being subjected to constant economic and social pressures, and accused the BJP-led government of favouring corporate and imperialist interests over the welfare of ordinary citizens. Calling the BJP an “imperialist government,” he asserted that such a government must be democratically defeated and overthrown in order to safeguard the rights, dignity, and interests of workers across the country.
