The CPI(M) is preparing to make democracy, civic services and accountable administration major issues in its campaign for the upcoming municipal elections in Tripura.
CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury said the party would approach voters with a focus on urban governance and the problems faced by ordinary citizens.
Speaking to the media, Chowdhury said the ongoing Village Committee election process had kept the party occupied, limiting the opportunity for detailed discussions on the municipal elections so far. He said the party would begin coordinated preparations once the present electoral situation becomes clearer.
Jitendra Chowdhury Raises Questions Over Urban Development
Chowdhury said urban development should not be viewed only through the construction of roads, drainage systems, electricity networks and drinking-water infrastructure.
According to the CPI(M) leader, a properly functioning city also requires a healthy social environment, civic culture and better quality of urban life. He alleged that several aspects of urban governance and city life have deteriorated in Tripura over the past eight-and-a-half years.
The Opposition leader particularly highlighted the condition of roads, lanes and drainage systems in Agartala and other urban areas.
He claimed that despite repeated demands for government funds and announcements regarding development projects, several civic problems remain unresolved.
Waterlogging Remains a Concern in Urban Areas
Recurring waterlogging after rainfall was another issue raised by Chowdhury.
He alleged that several localities experience accumulation of rainwater even after relatively limited rainfall, pointing to what he described as deficiencies in drainage infrastructure and maintenance.
Chowdhury also claimed that similar civic difficulties are being experienced in newly developed urban areas, raising questions about the implementation and sustainability of urban development projects.
CPI(M) Alleges Commission Demands and Extortion
The CPI(M) state secretary also levelled allegations concerning the broader political, social and law-and-order situation in Tripura.
Chowdhury alleged that complaints of coercive collection and commission demands have emerged in different areas of public life.

According to his allegations, people are facing pressure over financial payments in activities including land transactions, house repairs and the purchase of construction materials such as bricks and cement.
These are political allegations made by the Opposition leader and should be viewed in that context.
Municipal Elections to Become a Test of Civic Governance
Chowdhury said ordinary people are increasingly dissatisfied with the problems they encounter in their daily lives.
He indicated that the CPI(M) intends to use the municipal election campaign to discuss how citizens can collectively demand improved public services and greater accountability from local administrations.
The party's proposed campaign, according to Chowdhury, will focus on democratic governance, civic facilities, transparency and administrative accountability.
As preparations for the municipal elections begin to take shape, urban issues such as roads, drainage, waterlogging, infrastructure, public services and the functioning of local bodies are likely to receive greater attention from political parties and voters.
