Construction of the cricket stadium for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles has officially begun, marking a significant step in the sport’s return to the Olympic Games after 128 years.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Pomona on Wednesday. All matches will be held at the Fairgrounds Pomona, located about 50 km from Los Angeles, with the cricket competition scheduled from July 12 to July 29, 2028.
Cricket last featured in the Olympics at the 1900 Paris Olympics, where only two teams—England and France—competed. England won the gold medal, while France took silver.
International Cricket Council Chairman Jay Shah described the development as a “major milestone,” saying the sport is making rapid progress toward global expansion. He expressed confidence that the venue would become a key attraction during the Games and leave a lasting legacy for cricket in the United States.
Cricket at the 2028 Olympics will be played in the T20 format, with separate tournaments for men and women. Six teams will compete in each category, with squads of up to 15 players. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to the top three teams.
As part of preparations, matches from Major League Cricket will also be hosted at the venue. The Los Angeles Knight Riders are set to feature in games scheduled between July 1 and 5, offering an early glimpse of the facility ahead of the Olympics.
