Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Eusebio's record and scripts history as Portugal register their first win of FIFA World Cup 2026

Portugal (FPF) captain Cristiano Ronaldo once again rewrote football history after becoming the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cups. The 41-year-old superstar achieved the historic milestone during Portugal's emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group-stage clash at Houston Stadium on Tuesday.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, setting a new global record by netting in six separate World Cup editions — 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. He later added another goal in the 39th minute to help Portugal secure a dominant win and collect their first three points of the tournament.

The Portuguese legend also surpassed iconic striker Eusebio to become Portugal's all-time leading World Cup scorer with 10 goals, eclipsing Eusebio's previous record of nine goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo Makes World Cup History

Portugal started aggressively and nearly found an early breakthrough in the fourth minute when Ronaldo missed a close-range opportunity from Nuno Mendes' cross. However, just two minutes later, Joao Cancelo delivered a low cross which Ronaldo clinically converted with a right-footed finish, becoming the first footballer in history to score in six FIFA World Cups.

Nuno Mendes Doubles Portugal's Advantage

Portugal extended their lead in the 17th minute after Uzbekistan's Khamrobekov fouled Pedro Neto near the penalty area. Although Ronaldo stood over the free-kick, he allowed Nuno Mendes to take the strike. The left-back responded with a superb low shot to make it 2-0.

VAR Cancels Uzbekistan Goal

Uzbekistan thought they had reduced the deficit in the 29th minute when Aziz Ganiyev curled a sensational long-range effort into the top corner. However, following a VAR review, officials ruled out the goal due to a foul on Joao Cancelo during the build-up.

Ronaldo Breaks Eusebio's Record

Ronaldo struck again in the 39th minute after receiving a precise through ball from Bruno Fernandes. The veteran forward calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov to score his 10th World Cup goal, surpassing Eusebio and further cementing his legendary status.

Portugal entered halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Portugal Continue Dominance in Second Half

Portugal maintained complete control after the break. In the 59th minute, Joao Felix redirected Bruno Fernandes' corner with a clever backheel. The ball deflected off defender Abdukodir Khusanov and slipped through Nematov's gloves into the net, resulting in an own goal.

Ronaldo came close to completing his hat-trick on multiple occasions, but Uzbekistan goalkeeper Nematov produced several outstanding saves to deny the Portuguese captain.

Substitute Rafael Leao completed the rout in the 87th minute, smashing home Nelson Semedo's cut-back to seal an emphatic 5-0 victory.

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi Set Another Unique Record

Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi are both featuring in their sixth FIFA World Cup in 2026, becoming the first players in football history to achieve the feat.

While Messi has scored in five different World Cup editions, Ronaldo has remarkably scored in every World Cup tournament he has played.
