Delhi Satya Niketan Hostel Collapse: HC Seeks MCD, DU Reply

The Delhi High Court has raised serious questions over the Satya Niketan hostel building collapse, which has left seven people dead and 12 others rescued. The court has sought explanations from key authorities, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi University (DU), over the condition and safety of accommodation used by students coming to the capital from outside Delhi.

During Monday's hearing, the High Court expressed concern over the poor condition of hostels and other student accommodation facilities. The court observed that government authorities cannot distance themselves from their responsibility when the safety of students is involved.

The court has directed the MCD, Delhi government, Central government, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Delhi University to submit their responses within 10 days.

Seven Killed in Satya Niketan Building Collapse

The tragedy occurred on Sunday afternoon in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University's South Campus. A five-storey building being used as student accommodation collapsed, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.

Seven people have died in the incident, while 12 individuals have been rescued. Five of those rescued are reportedly in critical condition. Authorities have completed the rescue operation at the site.

The incident has raised renewed concerns over the structural safety of private hostels and paying guest accommodations in Delhi, particularly in areas heavily populated by university students.

Hostel Owner Hariram Bansal Detained

Police have detained Hariram Bansal, the alleged owner of the building, from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan.

A lookout notice had earlier been issued as police searched for him following the collapse. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the building's condition and the events that preceded the tragedy.

Questions Over Building Safety

The collapsed structure was around four decades old and had been operating as student accommodation. According to the information available in the original report, the building had not been classified as dangerous in MCD records.

The incident has nevertheless prompted questions about building inspections, structural safety standards and regulatory oversight of hostels and paying guest facilities in Delhi.

The High Court's intervention has also brought the safety of accommodation used by students from outside Delhi into sharper focus.

Rahul Gandhi Targets BJP Government

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also criticised the BJP government following the tragedy.

In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that the government repeatedly follows a pattern in which preventive measures are lacking before accidents, political statements dominate the aftermath, and responsibility is subsequently shifted to junior officials while senior decision-makers avoid accountability.

He also accused the government of spending years highlighting India's global image while failing to sufficiently address problems affecting ordinary citizens.

The Satya Niketan hostel collapse has now become a wider issue concerning student accommodation, building safety, administrative accountability and enforcement of construction regulations in the national capital.
