DGP Death Row: Tripura Opposition Seeks CM’s Resignation

The political dispute over the death of senior police officer Anurag Dhankar intensified in
Tripura on Monday after Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was expelled from the state Assembly for the day.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress strongly objected to the action, with party president Ashish Kumar Saha alleging that the MLA was removed from the House for raising serious questions that demanded clarification.

Speaking at Congress Bhavan, Saha said Roy Barman had sought answers over the circumstances surrounding Dhankar’s death, particularly the controversy concerning an alleged suicide note.

According to Saha, the Congress MLA had called for an independent investigation to determine why the alleged note had not been made public and whether there were shortcomings in the investigation into the police officer’s death.

The Pradesh Congress chief also questioned whether any form of pressure, provocation or outside influence could have contributed to the incident. He alleged that instead of addressing those questions, the government chose to expel Roy Barman from the Assembly for the remainder of the day.

Congress Demands Chief Minister’s Resignation

Saha also raised questions over Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s handling of the matter and demanded her resignation, arguing that an independent probe would require the investigation to remain free from political influence.

The Congress president said his party would continue to support Sudip Roy Barman and indicated that the opposition movement could intensify if a transparent investigation into Dhankar’s death is not initiated.

The controversy also resulted in a walkout by opposition legislators. Congress and CPI(M) MLAs left the Assembly in protest against Roy Barman’s expulsion.

Jitendra Chowdhury Raises Suicide Note Questions

After the opposition walkout, CPI(M) leader and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury told reporters that the circumstances surrounding Dhankar’s death required closer examination.

Chowdhury alleged that describing the death as suicide without addressing unanswered questions could obscure the possibility of provocation or other circumstances surrounding the incident.

He referred to questions reportedly raised by Dhankar’s wife concerning the whereabouts of the original alleged suicide note. Chowdhury also said Roy Barman had claimed that the document was sent through WhatsApp before Dhankar’s death.

The opposition leader further alleged that the Chief Minister and Home Minister did not provide sufficient details about the alleged suicide note during the Assembly proceedings.

Opposition Seeks Independent Probe

Chowdhury said the expulsion of an elected representative while he was raising questions about a matter of major public importance was unacceptable. He called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation so that the facts surrounding Dhankar’s death could be established.

He also said the issue has implications for the wider police establishment in Tripura, referring to the interests of approximately 40,000 police personnel.

According to Chowdhury, the investigation should establish the actual circumstances of Dhankar’s death and determine whether anyone played a role in influencing, provoking or contributing to the incident.

Political Tension Escalates in Tripura Assembly

The opposition parties also renewed their demand for the resignation of the Chief Minister and Home Minister, alleging that the government’s explanation had failed to resolve key questions surrounding the case.

At the same time, the opposition acknowledged the Speaker’s authority to take disciplinary action under Assembly rules. However, it argued that legislators should be given adequate opportunity to raise serious matters concerning public interest.

The expulsion of Sudip Roy Barman has consequently added another flashpoint to the ongoing political confrontation in Tripura, with the Congress and CPI(M) demanding greater transparency over the circumstances surrounding Anurag Dhankar’s death.
