Bangladesh has strongly objected to alleged remarks made by Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the deportation of foreign nationals from Assam. On Thursday, Dhaka summoned Indian Acting High Commissioner Pawan Badhe to the Foreign Ministry and lodged a formal protest over the issue.
Bangladesh officials stated that restraint was necessary while commenting on sensitive matters and warned that such public remarks could negatively affect bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The controversy erupted after Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a statement on April 26, claimed that 20 foreign nationals apprehended in Assam had been “pushed back” and sent to Bangladesh. His comments triggered criticism and diplomatic concern in Dhaka.
Reacting sharply, Bangladesh described the remarks as “counterproductive” and said such statements could damage mutual trust and understanding between the two nations.
India and Bangladesh share historically close and strategically important ties, rooted in the 1971 Liberation War. However, both countries have continued to face sensitivities over certain bilateral issues in recent years.
Following recent political developments in Dhaka, relations between the two countries are entering a new phase marked by both cooperation and emerging challenges.
