The by-election to the 56 Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency in Tripura is slated for April 9, with polling to be conducted between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The contest has drawn significant regional attention, with six candidates vying for the seat.
Situated in Tripura’s North District, the bypoll was necessitated by the demise of the sitting MLA and Speaker, Biswabandhu Sen.
Addressing the media, Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Pandey stated that campaigning will formally conclude at 5:00 PM on April 7, ushering in the mandatory 48-hour silence period. During this phase, all forms of public campaigning—including rallies, processions, and meetings—will be strictly prohibited in accordance with electoral regulations.
According to official data, the constituency comprises 46,142 registered voters, including 22,384 male and 23,758 female electors. Additionally, there are 91 service voters, of whom 88 are male and three female. A total of 55 polling stations have been established across 42 locations, with 32 situated in urban areas and 23 in rural regions. Notably, the arrangements include 11 all-women-managed polling stations, two operated by persons with disabilities, two managed by youth, and 11 designated as model polling stations.
Authorities have ensured that all polling centres are equipped with essential amenities such as potable water, adequate lighting, ramps for differently-abled voters, sanitation facilities, and shaded waiting areas.
To uphold transparency and security, 75 micro-observers (including reserves) have been deployed. Surveillance and enforcement measures include six naka points, 24 static surveillance teams, 12 flying squads, and dedicated video monitoring units. Polling personnel will be dispatched from the Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School to their respective polling, reception, and counting centres, with stringent security arrangements in place for the strong room.
The administration has also declared a dry period from April 7 to April 9. Officials reiterated that canvassing within a 100-metre radius of polling stations is strictly prohibited, with violations inviting legal consequences. However, candidates may establish election booths beyond this perimeter with limited provisions. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
