Former MS Dhoni could make his return to the IPL as early as next week, with reports suggesting his injury is healing faster than expected. According to team sources cited by The Times of India, the veteran is likely to be available for key upcoming matches.
Dhoni had suffered a calf strain during a practice session just before the tournament began, ruling him out of the opening three weeks. Now, speculation around his comeback is growing. He may feature against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23. If not, he could return in the clash against Gujarat Titans at Chepauk on April 26.
Chennai Super Kings will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, but Dhoni is set to miss that match. The team management is taking a cautious approach, prioritizing full recovery over an early return. “He is undergoing rehab, and we don’t want to take any risks,” a source said.
Despite being sidelined, Dhoni has been actively training in the nets. He has spent long sessions batting and focusing on power hitting, even clearing the ropes with ease—signs that he is regaining rhythm.
Once he returns, CSK may use Dhoni as an impact player rather than a full-time wicketkeeper. With Sanju Samson currently handling keeping duties, this role could allow Dhoni to focus on batting without added physical strain.
CSK, who have won two of their five matches and are currently placed eighth, will be hoping Dhoni’s experience and finishing ability can help revive their playoff push.
