The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified preparations for Durga Puja 2026, with a focus on improving civic infrastructure, road conditions, drainage, lighting and idol immersion facilities across the city.
A review meeting was held at the AMC conference hall on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Mayor Deepak Majumdar. Corporators representing different wards and senior municipal officials participated in the discussions.
Agartala City to Get Festive Makeover Ahead of Durga Puja
During the meeting, the Mayor said the corporation would undertake a series of measures to prepare Agartala for the upcoming Sharadiya Durga Puja celebrations.
The civic body plans to strengthen essential services and improve public infrastructure before the festival. Key areas under consideration include drainage improvement, road repairs and street lighting, particularly in locations expected to experience heavy public movement.
The preparations come at a time when Agartala is expected to witness increased pedestrian and vehicular movement during the Puja period. Recent reports have also highlighted the AMC's broader focus on improving civic services and urban infrastructure ahead of Durga Puja.

Special Focus on Durga Idol Immersion Arrangements
The AMC is also giving priority to arrangements for Durga idol immersion on Dashami.
According to the Mayor, steps will be taken to ensure that devotees, puja committees and visitors do not encounter difficulties during the immersion process at Dashami Ghat.
The corporation is also preparing arrangements for the traditional ‘Maayer Gomon’ programme associated with the post-Puja immersion procession. The event has been organised in recent years, and officials are planning necessary measures to ensure its orderly conduct.
18 Additional Ghats to Receive Attention
Besides Dashami Ghat, 18 other immersion ghats are located across different wards under the Agartala Municipal Corporation. Durga idols are immersed at these locations following the Puja celebrations.
The AMC has decided to take steps to renovate these ghats and improve lighting facilities, with the objective of making the immersion process safer and more convenient.
The focus on ghats is significant because the city's Durga Puja preparations involve not only pandals and public spaces but also post-festival immersion arrangements. The Tripura government's earlier programmes have also placed emphasis on organising the ‘Maayer Gomon’ procession and making the immersion ceremony more organised and memorable.
AMC's Wider Urban Infrastructure Push
The latest preparations form part of a broader effort to improve Agartala's urban infrastructure. Earlier this year, the AMC unveiled a substantial 2026–27 budget aimed at developing the capital with improved civic amenities and infrastructure.
The state government has also been pushing several Agartala Smart City projects, with authorities previously directing agencies to accelerate infrastructure works before Durga Puja.
