FIR Lodged Over Manushree Crowdfunding Funds in Tripura

The crowdfunding campaign launched to support the medical treatment of critically ill child Manushree has come under fresh scrutiny in Tripura following complaints and questions over the collection, transfer and utilisation of donated funds.

A complaint has reportedly been submitted at West Agartala Police Station against Raja Saha and several others, seeking clarity on the money raised for Manushree’s treatment and the manner in which the funds have allegedly been handled.

The development has raised wider concerns among people who contributed to the campaign, particularly over the total amount collected, the bank accounts through which the money has moved and whether the funds are being used exclusively for the child’s medical treatment.

West Tripura DM Says ₹4.5 Crore Was Collected

West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar said that Raja Saha and Manushree’s father, Dhruv Chowdhury, had met him regarding financial matters connected with the crowdfunding campaign.

According to information presented before the District Magistrate, approximately ₹4.5 crore had been collected through crowdfunding up to August.

The administration has now initiated an examination of the financial details associated with the fundraising effort.

The latest development comes amid earlier public discussions over significantly different figures concerning the amount collected for Manushree’s treatment. Other reports in recent weeks have also highlighted discrepancies in figures cited by individuals associated with the fundraising campaign.

Complaint Raises Questions Over Crowdfunding Accounts

The issue gained further attention after social workers reportedly approached the authorities on Wednesday evening with concerns about the accounts maintained for the crowdfunding campaign.

A complaint was subsequently submitted at West Agartala Police Station, where the allegations and financial transactions are reportedly being examined.

The central question before the authorities is whether the money collected from members of the public for Manushree’s treatment has been spent for the purpose for which it was donated.

The official West Tripura district administration website lists West Agartala Police Station among the police stations operating in the district.

Small Savings Department Officer to Examine Fund Trail

Dr Vishal Kumar said an officer from the Small Savings Department has been assigned to examine the financial aspects of the matter.

The inquiry is expected to look into the amount collected, the accounts involved, the movement of funds and the expenditure claimed in connection with Manushree’s treatment.

If the investigation establishes financial irregularities or evidence of fraud, the administration may seek police intervention and initiate appropriate legal proceedings, according to the District Magistrate.

At this stage, the allegations remain under examination and no conclusion regarding financial wrongdoing has been established.

Questions Over Treatment Cost and Different Figures

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to the varying figures cited in connection with Manushree’s treatment.

Two women reportedly appeared at West Agartala Police Station on Thursday and raised questions concerning medical expenses, the price of injections and figures mentioned during the fundraising campaign.

One figure reportedly put the cost of injections in Tripura at around ₹16.20 crore, while another figure of approximately ₹9.70 crore was allegedly mentioned in connection with a visit to Delhi.

These differing figures have led to questions about the actual treatment requirement and the total amount sought through crowdfunding.

Earlier reports have also recorded different estimates of the amount collected and the treatment expenditure, making documentary verification of the crowdfunding accounts particularly important.

HDFC Bank Manager Alleges Pressure Over ₹3 Crore Transfer

A separate and serious allegation has reportedly been raised by Biswajit Chakraborty, manager of the HDFC Bank branch at Netaji Chowmuhani.

According to the complaint attributed to the bank manager, Raja Saha and several other individuals allegedly approached the bank seeking the transfer of ₹3 crore from an account belonging to Manushree’s father, Dhruv Chowdhury.

The bank manager reportedly questioned the purpose of transferring such a substantial amount to an account associated with Raja Saha.

He has further alleged that he was subjected to pressure and threats after asking for an explanation and supporting documentation for the proposed transaction.

Chakraborty reportedly refused to process the transfer without the required documents and justification.

He also claimed that he had learned that ₹2 crore had already been transferred from an SBI branch in Agartala.

Police had reportedly not registered a formal case on the bank manager’s complaint as of Thursday night, with officials saying that the matter was being examined.

Manushree’s Father Gives Explanation on Fund Transfer

Amid the allegations, a Facebook post attributed to Dhruv Chowdhury offered a different explanation regarding the movement of the crowdfunding money.

According to the post, the funds collected through the campaign are being transferred to an NGO bank account for the treatment-related purpose.

The post reportedly claimed that the money held with SBI had already been transferred, while a temporary issue had delayed the transfer of funds from HDFC Bank.

It further stated that the remaining money would be transferred to the NGO's account within two to three days and that details of the funds collected in the account would subsequently be presented.

Dhruv Chowdhury has maintained that the entire amount raised through crowdfunding will be used for Manushree’s medical treatment.

Why the Manushree Crowdfunding Case Matters

The controversy comes after months of public fundraising efforts for Manushree, whose treatment has been described as extremely expensive. The child’s medical condition and treatment requirements have previously received attention from the Tripura government, including an assurance from Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha that possible assistance would be explored.

The latest dispute, however, has shifted attention from fundraising itself to the need for a transparent financial record.

For donors and members of the public, the key issues include:

  • The total amount actually received through crowdfunding.

  • The amount collected through bank transfers, UPI, cash and other channels.

  • The total amount already spent on Manushree’s treatment.

  • The current balance held in different accounts.

  • The purpose and recipient of major fund transfers.

  • Documentary evidence supporting medical expenditure.

  • Whether all collected funds are being used exclusively for Manushree’s treatment.

Recent reporting on the wider controversy has similarly highlighted demands for a complete and verifiable accounting of the crowdfunding proceeds.

Administrative and Police Inquiry Now Underway

The case has now moved beyond social-media allegations, with financial questions being examined by the administration and complaints reaching the police.

The ongoing inquiry is expected to establish the actual amount collected, trace the movement of the funds and determine whether the money has been utilised in accordance with its stated purpose.

Until the authorities complete their examination and documentary evidence is verified, allegations of fraud or financial misuse should be treated as allegations rather than established facts.

For thousands of people who contributed to Manushree’s treatment, the central concern remains straightforward: how much money was collected, where is the money now, and how much has actually been spent on the child’s medical care?
