Former Militants Threaten August 15 Road Blockade in Tripura Over Unfulfilled Peace Accord Promises

Security agencies in Tripura have stepped up surveillance ahead of Independence Day 2026 after former insurgents warned of statewide road blockades on August 15, alleging that the governments at the Centre and in the state have failed to honour commitments made under a Peace Agreement.
The warning was issued on Tuesday by former militant leader Kablajoy Tripura during a press conference at the Tribal Hostel in Melarmath, Agartala.

Over 400 Former Insurgents Await Rehabilitation
According to Kablajoy Tripura, more than 400 members of the erstwhile All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) surrendered their arms at Jampui on April 9, 2024, following a peace settlement with the government.
He claimed that although nearly two years have passed since they returned to the mainstream, the rehabilitation package and other assurances promised under the agreement remain pending.
Former Cadres Continue to Face Criminal Cases
The former militant leader alleged that criminal cases against many surrendered cadres have not been withdrawn despite the peace process. As a result, many continue to appear before courts and receive legal notices, creating financial and social hardship.

He also claimed that the authorities have yet to provide identity cards and other rehabilitation benefits that were promised under the peace accord.
Warning of Statewide Protest on Independence Day
Demanding immediate implementation of all commitments, Kablajoy said the former insurgents expect a formal assurance from both the Central Government and the Tripura Government before August 15.
Failing that, they plan to organize road blockades across different parts of Tripura on Independence Day, a move that could significantly affect public movement and security arrangements.
Repeated Appeals Allegedly Ignored
The former militant leader said surrendered cadres have repeatedly submitted representations to both governments seeking implementation of the agreement, but claimed no concrete action has been taken.
Expressing frustration over the prolonged delay, he said the group is unwilling to continue living in uncertainty and warned that they are prepared to intensify their agitation if their demands remain unaddressed.
Security Agencies on High Alert
The announcement has raised fresh concerns among security officials as Tripura prepares for Independence Day celebrations. Authorities are expected to strengthen security measures across the state to prevent any disruption while maintaining law and order.
