Gold for Gavit as India Rises in CWG 2026 Standings

India enjoyed another memorable outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games , with para sprinter Dilip Mahadu Gavit delivering a sensational gold-medal performance while long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured silver and the Indian boxing contingent guaranteed several more podium finishes.

The impressive performances lifted India to 15 medals, including three gold, nine silver and three bronze, moving the country into eighth place in the overall medal standings. 

Dilip Mahadu Gavit Creates History with Gold

Dilip Mahadu Gavit produced a brilliant run in the men's T47 para 100 metres, crossing the finish line in 10.71 seconds to capture India's third gold medal of the Games.

The race became even more memorable as fellow Indian Mohammed Basil finished second in 10.83 seconds, giving India a historic one-two finish in the event. The achievement further highlighted India's growing dominance in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games. 

Murali Sreeshankar Wins Second Straight Commonwealth Silver

Star long jumper Murali Sreeshankar continued his remarkable consistency by earning the silver medal with a best jump of 8.09 metres.

The achievement made him the first Indian male long jumper to claim silver medals at two consecutive Commonwealth Games. Jamaica's Tajay Gayle secured gold after registering 8.15 metres, narrowly edging Sreeshankar in a thrilling final. 

Indian Boxers Assure Multiple Medals

India's boxing squad enjoyed another outstanding day, with several athletes advancing to the semi-finals.

Jasmine Lamboria defeated England's Eilis Glynn 4-1 in the women's 57kg division.

Arundhati overcame New Zealand's Morgan Anderson 3-1 in the women's 70kg category.

Sakshi Chaudhary dominated Northern Ireland's Kathleen Freire 5-0 in the women's 51kg event.

In the men's competition, Narendra Berwal edged Samoa's Michael Seko 3-2 in the 90kg category.

Ankush Panghal outclassed Seychelles' Jay Mickok 5-0 in the men's 80kg division, while Sachin registered another convincing 5-0 victory against Botswana's Treasure Moremi in the men's 70kg contest.

Earlier, Lovlina Borgohain, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghangus, and Jadumani Singh had already entered the semi-finals, ensuring India additional medals.

Since Commonwealth Games boxing does not conduct bronze-medal playoffs, every semi-finalist automatically secures at least a bronze medal. 

Toor and Gill Enter Shot Put Final

India also strengthened its medal hopes in athletics after Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill qualified for the men's shot put final.

Toor comfortably crossed the automatic qualification standard by throwing 20.14 metres on his second attempt after opening with 19.93 metres.

Gill impressed with a season-best effort of 19.95 metres in his opening attempt before finishing fifth overall among the qualifiers to book his place in the final.

Weightlifting Brings Disappointment

India, however, suffered disappointment in weightlifting.

Nineteen-year-old Sanjana, who had earlier claimed bronze at the Asian Championships, failed to record a successful snatch lift after missing all three attempts at 94kg in the women's 77kg final.

She became the second Indian weightlifter to finish without a medal at these Games after Nirupama Devi Seram, who earlier failed to register a valid clean and jerk lift in her event.
