Hindi Introduced as Official Language in Assam Assembly; Bodo Continues as Official Language

In a significant legislative development, the Assam Legislative Assembly has decided to introduce Hindi as an official language for Assembly proceedings beginning with the Budget Session starting Monday. The announcement was made by Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass, who clarified that the move will not affect the existing status of Assamese, English, or Bodo.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Speaker Dass said the decision was finalized during the General Purpose Committee meeting held on Saturday. The committee unanimously approved the inclusion of Hindi as an additional official language in the House.

According to Dass, Assembly proceedings will now officially be conducted in Assamese, English, Bodo, and Hindi, reflecting the state's multilingual character. He stated that the decision was taken to accord due respect to Hindi, which he described as the nation's "Rashtra Bhasha."

Assam Assembly TV Gets a New Identity

The Speaker also announced another important administrative decision. The Assembly's official broadcasting platform, previously known as ALA TV, will be renamed "Assam Bidhan Sabha TV." The rebranding is aimed at providing a clearer identity to the legislative channel that telecasts Assembly proceedings.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Rejects Speculation Over Bodo Language

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma categorically dismissed reports suggesting that Bodo could lose its official status in the Assembly after Hindi's inclusion.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the Speaker had confirmed that no proposal exists to discontinue the use of Bodo during Assembly proceedings.

Sarma emphasized that the Bodo language remains an integral part of Assam's cultural heritage, historical legacy, and social identity. He said the language represents the traditions, aspirations, and contributions of the Bodo community while enriching the state's cultural diversity.

Reiterating the government's commitment, the Chief Minister assured that every effort would continue to be made to preserve, promote, and strengthen the Bodo language for future generations.

Constitutional Recognition of Bodo

Bodo enjoys constitutional recognition as one of the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. It was also granted the status of Associate Official Language of the Assam Legislative Assembly through the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Act, 2020, ensuring its continued use in legislative business.

The latest decision to introduce Hindi therefore expands the linguistic framework of the Assembly while leaving the constitutional and official position of Bodo fully intact.
